Welcome to Week 1 of The Don’t Cut Your Own Bangs Countdown: Best Lessons of the Year — a cozy, sparkly, end-of-year celebration of wisdom, wonder, and the moments that made us stop and say, “Wait… THAT.”

And this week, we’re diving right into the heart of facing adversity — the kind that shows up wrapped in frustration, tangled in self doubt, and usually sprinkled with a little self limiting behavior. Not exactly the holiday gift you asked for… but maybe exactly the one you needed.

Let’s unwrap it together.

When Frustration Speaks: Facing Adversity & Shutting Down Self Limiting Behavior
Discover how facing adversity can reveal hidden wisdom and help you overcome self limiting behavior. A festive, uplifting recap of Week 1’s “Best Of” episode.

Facing Adversity: What Frustration Is Really Trying to Tell You

In this episode, I revisit one of my favorite solo casts of the year: What Is Your Frustration Telling You?

Because here’s the truth — facing adversity isn’t just about powering through difficulty. It’s about listening. Paying attention. Leaning into your emotional GPS and trusting that frustration is not a flaw; it’s feedback.

And yes, even in December — with twinkly lights glowing, holiday schedules bursting, and end-of-year energy swirling — frustration still shows up. Maybe more than usual. And that’s okay.

Why? Because frustration often reveals:

  • Where your boundaries want strengthening
  • Where you’re ready for change
  • Where self limiting behavior has quietly taken the wheel
  • Where your deeper desires are nudging (or shouting) for attention

Frustration, in its own dramatic holiday-movie way, is a messenger. And when we’re facing adversity, it speaks loudly.

🎄 How Self Limiting Behavior Slips In This Time of Year

Ah yes… the silent saboteur.
The “I should…”
The “I’m not enough…”
The “I’ll deal with that in January…”

This season is famous for amplifying self limiting behavior. But in this episode, we flip the script. Instead of letting those thoughts run the show, we use them as indicators. Clues. Invitations.

Because sometimes adversity isn’t a wall — it’s a doorway. And recognizing self limiting habits is the key that helps you walk through it.

When Adversity Turns Into Magic — Featuring John Kippen

The second half of this “Best Of” episode highlights one of my favorite conversations of the year with coach, speaker, and magician John Kippen.

John’s story is a powerful example of transforming pain into purpose, and facing adversity with clarity, creativity, and resilience. After experiencing profound loss and unexpected life challenges, he didn’t shut down — he opened up. To magic. To meaning. To his own internal transformation. You can watch his TED Talk here.

A few irresistible insights you’ll hear in this week’s highlights:

💫 Where adversity becomes possibility

John doesn’t pretend hardship is pretty — but he shows how it can be profoundly reshaping.

🎩 How self limiting behavior disappears in the presence of courage

By taking one brave step at a time, John rewrote the narrative he thought he was stuck with.

🪄 Magic isn’t an illusion — it’s a mindset

A reminder that the extraordinary often happens in the cracks of what we think is impossible.

His TED Talk is unforgettable for a reason. His story is a living example that when you’re facing adversity, you always have more choices than you think.

🎁 A Scrapbook Episode with a Holiday Twist

This is my first curated “best of” using clips — so it may feel a little jump-cutty at times. That’s by design. Think of it as a holiday scrapbook of the most soul-shifting, heart-tugging, insight-filled moments from the year.

Not linear.
Not perfect.
But meaningful.

A cozy little reflection to close the year with intention and a spark of magic.

Key Takeaways

  • Resilience grows when we let adversity spark curiosity instead of fear.
  • Facing adversity often reveals powerful guidance hiding inside frustration.
  • Your emotions are information — not evidence of failure.
  • Self limiting behavior becomes louder during challenging seasons, but it’s always workable.
